Guide lines of a Point Guard

Leadership- when it comes to a decision making point in the game all eyes and ears are on the point guard.  The point guard is the player/coach, with constant non-verbal and verbal communication with the head coach and staff, team strategies are executed firmly by the leader on the floor.  You must do everything in the best interest of the team in order to gain the respect.

Ideal training:  scenario playing, game film, asking questions

Handles -As a point guard ball handling must be unlimited.  In order to maneuver on the whole floor there must not be any obvious weaknesses.  A point guard should be able to create space between him and the defender as well as get to key spots on the court.

Ideal training: Ball pounding, four corner penetration, blind folded dribbling, around the horn, two ball handling

Go to moves - A point guard must have a go to move, and a counter attack move.  It must be down on reaction instead of a thought out process. A safety move also known as a retreat move to stop the count or develop vision for open looks.

I deal training: fundamentals.

Passing -skills Point guards must have the mentality, pass first shoot last.  You must pride yourself in making good crisps pass while setting your teammates up for success.  This includes rhythm shots, assist to assist and passes that lead players to where they are suppose to be.

Ideal training:  Spot passing (L/R handed. Over head, bounce, chest and behind the back)

Perimeter shooting - Good point guard are also a scoring threat  Although it is a second option pgs must be aware of the open shot and knocking it down.  Points guards with good shooting in their arsenal spreads out the defense making help side very hard.

Ideal training:  5 spot shooting, Stationary shooting. One handed form shooting

Vision- as a point guard you must recognize the positive and negative places on the court.  How you tell the difference is spacing.  Point guards must be able to move in all directions at any give moment.  Defensive strategies for ball handlers are to cut off the court limiting possible directions to go.  Negative spots on the court are corners, deep penetrations in the key and inches across the half court line.

Ideal training: pick up games.  Assisted points only, getting to know you teammates (chemistry)

Exceptional athleticism- Point guards must be in exceptional shape.  Most likely in critical situations in the game you must be able to be mentally tough.  Not letting fatigue multi-tasking affect you decision making. Must be quick but not in a hurry.  Trained in playing at an up-tempo fast breaking mode, as well as a slow down half court chess game.

Ideal training: Explosive Reaction
